NAVAL HISTORY
HIGHLIGHTS
Meet your guide outside the Ostseekai cruise ship terminal and travel to Laboe at the mouth of the Kiel fjord. Along the way your guide will provide you with an introduction to Kiel and its shipping and naval history.
Upon arrival in Laboe explore the extraordinary WWII dry-docked German submarine U-995. Climb on board, mind your head and consider the cramped conditions for the crew of 50+ submariners living on-board this marvel of mechanical engineering. This is a hands-on experience of real German history you won't want to miss.
After exploring the submarine, climb the 85 metre tower of the Naval museum dedicated to all sailors lost at sea. From the viewing platform on a good day you can see Kiel stretch out below as well as the shores of Denmark on the horizon to the north. For those with a more passionate German WWII interest and time to spare, there is also an engaging naval museum to explore.
Please note that our Naval History tour includes 1 hour transport from the Ostseekai cruise ship terminal to Laboe by ferry and a 30 minute return trip by private taxi. Start your tour with a short drive to Kiel Holtenau to explore the old Kiel lighthouse and the Baltic Sea lock for the Kiel Canal. Opened in 1895, the Kiel Canal splits North Germany in two and is the busiest artifical waterway in the world.

Our tour continues to Schilksee – home of the world famous annual Kiel Week sailing regatta and the base for water sports for the 1972 Munich Olympics.
